How to Soften Your Hair

Every girl wants hair that's 'touchably' soft. But when heat styling damage or poor haircare has left you with a head full of straw instead of a head full of silk, it can be easy to throw in the towel and give up. Buzzers anyone? The truth is, you can soften your coarse hair with just a little patience and the right tools. You will probably need to make a few adjustments to your normal hair routine. Follow these tips to help transform your hair from coarse and brittle to soft and silky.

Avoid products with short chain alcohols: Products that contain certain types of alcohol can make the problem worse by drying hair out. You may be under the impression that all alcohols are bad, but there are actually some that help to hydrate hair. What you need to avoid are products that contain ethanol, isopropyl alcohol, propyl alcohol, and SD alcohol.

Air dry as often as possible: Heat styling contributes to coarse, damaged hair. Give your tresses a much needed break and let them air dry as often as possible.

Only shampoo the scalp and only do so when necessary: Applying shampoo to your ends will only dry them out even more. Try only shampooing your scalp and cutting back to shampooing every 2-3 days. Conditioning in between shampoos can help keep hair moisturized and fresh.

Deep condition once a week: Do you really want to know how to soften your hair? Moisturize! A good deep conditioning treatment will help to soften your hair and keep it well hydrated. Given the intensity of these treatments, it is best to only use them once a week.

Drink plenty of water and eat a healthy diet: Our hair is a reflection of our health. You can restore your hair from the inside out by ensuring you drink plenty of water and eat a healthy, balanced diet. Incorporating healthy fats, like olive oil, into your diet will also help moisturize and soften your hair.

How to Soften Your Hair With Home Remedies

There's a reason why most home remedies have been passed down from generation to generation – they work! More often than not, the ingredients are things you already have in your kitchen. Not only do these remedies save you money, they are also healthy and natural.

Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse

You have probably heard of some of the amazing benefits of apple cider vinegar for health, but did you know it can actually help to soften your hair? When hair is in its ideal natural state, it will have a pH of 4.5 to 5.5. Apple cider vinegar (ACV) has a pH of 2.9, which is pretty close to hair's natural pH level. An ACV rinse will help balance your hair's pH, soften hair, create beautiful shine and eliminate frizz. Just mix 1 cup of water with 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar. Rinse your hair with the mixture after you have cleansed and conditioned. Don't worry, the smell will dissipate after your hair has dried.

Hot Oil Treatment

A hot oil treatment is perfect for coarse, dry hair. They provide intense moisture and essential nutrients to parched locks. While you can easily purchase a treatment from the store, it's just as easy to make one at home. Jojoba, olive, sweet almond, castor and coconut oils are all great choices for the base of your treatment. Fill a large bowl about halfway with boiling water. In a separate smaller bowl, add 1 to 2 tablespoons of your choice oil. Gently nest the smaller bowl into the larger bowl. Be careful not to get any water into the oil filled bowl. Allow the oil to warm up by letting it sit for five to ten minutes. Apply the treatment to your hair, starting with the roots. Wrap hair in a towel or put on a plastic shower cap and let the treatment sit for 30-60 minutes.
