The Best Keratin Hair Products

Keratin hair treatments, a.k.a. Brazilian hair treatments, have become wildly popular over the last few years. It's really no surprise, seeing as hundreds of women can attest to its defrizzing and relaxing affect on their locks. For most ladies, being able to achieve straight, smooth styles in half the time is a godsend. While there has been some controversy over the ingredients used in keratin hair treatments, there are plenty of happy customers that feel they could not live without this 'miracle.'

What is Keratin Treatment?

Hair is actually made of 88% keratin. Each time you color or apply heat to your hair, you weaken the keratin. What you're left with is lackluster, damaged tresses. Not a good look for any girl!

So, what exactly is this 'miracle' treatment? Simply put, keratin treatments are designed to smooth hair and relax curls . Those with wavy locks may find that their hair is straight after a session. However, those with curls will likely walk away with loose waves. In either case, hair becomes smoother, easier to manage and healthier over time.

The Keratin Treatment Process

Keratin treatments are simple in nature. The protein keratin is mixed with formaldehyde and applied to hair. A flat iron is then used to seal in the mixture with heat. The formaldehyde works to keep the keratin molecules together. This is what actually relaxes the curl. Although sessions may take a couple of hours, the process itself is straightforward. Here's what you can expect when you walk in for your appointment.

First, the hair is cleansed with a clarifying shampoo, and then blow dried. Your stylist will then begin applying the mixture in sections. Each one is then combed through to ensure the mixture is applied to all strands. You are then left to wait for a period of time (usually 20 minutes) to let the mixture set. Afterward, your stylist will inform you of all the things you can't do. For 72 hours you must refrain from putting your hair behind your ears, putting your hair up in a ponytail, shampooing, and getting your hair wet. When you are finally able to wash your hair again, you must use a special sodium laurel sulfate free shampoo.

Treatments last between three and six months, depending on how often you wash your hair. In between sessions, you must continue to use the special sulfate free shampoo.

Although there may be some hoops to jump through, you really cannot argue with the results. If smooth, shiny locks are what you desire, a keratin hair treatment may be the answer!

Keratin Hair Treatment Side Effects

Because this process often involves the use of formaldehyde, a carcinogen, safety is always a concern. Keratin hair treatment side effects range from mild to severe. Some people complained of nosebleeds and skin irritation. Other, more serious, side effects include excessive hair loss, deterioration of hair's texture and allergic reactions.
